Auckland band Street Chant recently released their long-awaited second album, Hauora. With a nationwide tour under their collective belts, the trio stopped by The 13th Floor to record a video session. It was a busy day at The 13th Floor yesterday. Two of New Zealand’s most exciting bands paid a visit. Both Street Chant and Yoko-Zuna stopped by to play a few tunes and chat with Marty Duda. We’ll have both of those video sessions posted soon. In the meantime, here are Yoko-Zuna performing Lightning Sabres, a track from their new EP, Luminols, out today on Loop.
Tom Cunliffe and his band recently stopped by The 13th Floor to record a video session, featuring three songs from his debut album, Howl And Whisper. The album was recorded in Lyttelton at Ben Edwards’ studio and features Dave Khan, Will Wood, Tom Landon-Lane and Steve Huf. We’ll have the entire session ready for you shortly, but in the meantime, here’s Tom Cunliffe’s stunning performance of Old Moon.
Ryan Bingham is in Auckland to perform at The Tuning Fork tonight. Yesterday he and his band played for a lunchtime crowd at Real Groovy Records. If you missed it, here’s a video clip of them performing Southside Of Heaven. Check out the jam these guys break into near the end of this seven and a half minute stunner.
Auckland band Mice On Stilts have just released their first full-length album, Hope For A Mourning. The band…all seven of them…trouped up to The 13th Floor for a Video Session. Coco Davis has just released her debut album, Old Haunts, a collection of ancient blues songs originally sung by the likes of Memphis Minnie and Bessie Smith. Coco, along with guitarist Tom Rodwell are on tour with a performance tonight at The Meteor in Hamilton…they’ll be at Auckland’s Q Theatre on April 16th. Coco and Tom stopped by The 13th Floor studios to talk to Marty Duda about the new record and to play a few tunes. Hollie Smith has just released her third album, Water Or Gold. Just before heading out on the road she stopped by The 13th Floor Studios to talk to Marty Duda about the new record. Hollie spoke specifically about the heartbreaking story behind the song Helena, then performed a stunning version of the tune for our cameras.
It’s a rare opportunity to catch a live performance by Damien Binder these days. The Kiwi singer-songwriter has been living in Sydney for the past decade or so and he hasn’t released a new album since 2009. So The 13th Floor was thrilled to discover that not only was Damien in Auckland a short while ago, but that he had just released A New World, his fourth solo album. There’s a buzz around Aussie singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin. The up-and-coming musician is about to release her debut album later this year after recording it in Lyttleton. Julia stopped by The 13th Floor while opening for Marlon Williams in Auckland and chatted to Marty Duda. She also performed three songs that feature on the new album, tentatively titled Don’t Let The Kids Win. Watch Julia’s video session here:
New Zealand singer-songwriter Damien Binder has been living in Australia for the past decade or so. The former Second Child bandmember has just released A New World, his first album since 2009. The 13th Floor caught up with Damien Binder while he made a brief, low-key visit to Auckland and invited him up to the studio to record a video session. We’ll have the entire programme ready soon but in the meantime, here is Damien Binder performing the title track from A New World.
Auckland based musician and composer Paul McLaney has been making music as a solo artist and with Gramsci and The Impending Adorations for almost 20 years. Paul’s latest project is Play On, which is described as “a musical imagining of the great solioquies of William Shakespeare”. Yes, that’s right, Paul McLaney is collaborating with Shakespeare! The results can be heard at the Pop-Up Globe Theatre on Sunday, April 3rd. Is addition to Paul, the concert version of Play On will feature Julia Deans, Maisey Rika, Esther Stephens, Mara TK, Laughton Kora and Cameron Rhodes plus a band and string section. Paul McLaney recently dropped by The 13th Floor studios to tell Marty Duda about the project and to perform two brand new songs that will feature in Play On, the concert. Austin’s Shakey Graves, aka Alejandro Rose-Garcia, stopped by The 13th Floor just after playing a rousing set at this weekend’s Auckland City Limits Festival. Shakey still has more work to to here in New Zealand, playing a gig this Wednesday, March 23rd at Bodega in Wellington. Dave Dobbyn has just released his new album, Harmony House. It’s his first new material in seven years and Dave had production assistance from Samuel Flynn Scott and Luke Buda of The Phoenix Foundation. Dave recently stopped by The 13th Floor studios to talk to Marty Duda about making Harmony House and to play a couple of songs from the new record, plus an old favourite with his buddy, drummer Ross Burge.
